According to the shipping industry network, it was mentioned at the meeting that due to the impact of the COVID-19, since the second half of the year, the overseas terminals have been operating inefficiently, the demand for container transport has soared, the terminals are congested, empty containers cannot return, and extreme logistics events have caused the sea freight rate to rise month by month, which is far higher than last year.

According to the China Containerized Freight Index released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, it was reported on July 23 at 2854.02 points, an increase of 3% compared to the previous period.

Renowned maritime consulting firm Drewry stated in its latest report this month that it is not uncommon for spot freight rates on shipping routes to experience double-digit annual growth rates. Although the market is no longer shocked by such extreme rates, in reality, the situation in the consolidation market is unprecedented. At present, there is no sign that spot freight rates have reached their peak. It is expected that in the third quarter, with the support of ocean freight surcharges, spot freight rates will further rise. Driven by the global economic recovery and replenishment activities, the demand for goods remains high. In the second half of this year, with the further relaxation of global pandemic lockdown measures, the demand growth for physical consumption may weaken, while service spending will gradually recover. However, the occurrence of extreme logistics events will still affect the tightness of the logistics supply chain and push freight rates up again.

However, in terms of production and operation, high freight rates have overwhelmed the majority of shippers and have a direct impact on global trade. Research has found that current freight rates have begun to suppress shipping demand, forcing some companies to cancel orders or switch from foreign trade to domestic sales. The impact on the shipper will ultimately affect the upstream and downstream service providers of the carrier.

The shippers who participated in the survey call for the international shipping industry to focus on the long term, cherish the market opportunities that China has recovered from the current epidemic, and establish long-term stable and mutually beneficial cooperative relationships with customers.
